So … The PSOAS! This is an amazing muscle living in the depth of our bodies. At its best, the psoas contributes to convey messages from the central nervous system in a completely free and dynamic way. Together with the diaphragm, it plays a vital role for our respiratory movements. The instinctive functions of the psoas, for example to contract our bodies into a protective ball or foetal position, is activated by the sympathetic nervous system. This part of our nervous system is one we can't consciously control. It is in charge of innervating our hearts to beat, our lungs to breathe etc. Please read Liz Koch's amazing "The Psoas Book" if you want more info on the attributes of the psoas. My role here is just to tempt you with the amazing results you can get from getting to know your own psoas …
This summer I had a breakthrough as a concert pianist. One of my main "symptoms" on stage used to be that I could never relax, feel the chair I was sitting on and be comfortable in my own body. I would typically be overwhelmed by the adrenaline that comes with performing, and actually not feel my body much at all.
Over the last year, as I worked on releasing and feeling my psoas more and more, I came to discover that whenever I would feel stressed or worried about something, my psoas would ALWAYS be in contraction. It is like a precious little messenger telling you that you need to relax and enjoy the moment. How cute.
Anyway, this summer I had the experience of being able to breathe freely and in coherence with the music (which, in my experience is present with all my favorite musicians/performances), I felt my body align more comfortably through my sitting bones on top of the chair and my psoas as the dynamic conveyor of energy at the core of my body. I had fun, and i was able to enjoy what I was doing! A very gratifying experience!
Please enjoy Pavana playing happily =)
